Even though this facial rolling trend~ is suddenly en vogue, it’s actually been around since the 7th century! It began in China, where they believed that facial rolling could prevent the manifestations of aging. Now, they used jade, but others choose to use rose quartz – both have very different qualities, each of which are beautifully beneficial for your face.
The vibrations of the rose quartz crystal actually align with the heart chakra. The crystal itself can help unclog the tension, stress, and negativity that can lead to signs of aging. Its vibrations can heal the heart, raising self-esteem, restoring confidence, and balancing emotions associated with heartbreak and self-doubt. Packed with magnesium, iron, and oxygen, rose quartz can help reduce inflammation and renew skin cells. (But we’ll get to the benefits in a second!) Ancient Egyptians actually thought it could play a role in anti-aging. Goddesses would gather rose quartz crystals by the Nile, and used them to keep their skin clear and free of wrinkles. I’ll bow to that.
Benefits of facial rolling
I could honestly write about the benefits of facial rolling for days, but for the sake of readability, let’s sum it up into some quick bullet points, SHALLLL WE!
– Improve blood circulation and skin tone
– Improve skin elasticity
– Reduce dark under-eye circles, facial puffiness, and pore size (can I get an amen)
– Promote lymphatic drainage + detox of skin
– Tone up facial muscles, reducing the appearance of wrinkles (!!!)
– Improve skin absorption of products (ie oils, toners, etc)
How we roll
I use my roller after cleansing/toning your face (my favorite toner is witch hazel). I prefer to roll dry, but you can also roll with a facial oil (I use rosehip oil). The roller distributes the oil evenly across your skin, allowing it to really get into your pores and absorb better!
There are two ways to roll: either in a gentle downward movement, or in a more aggressive upward movement. The downward movement stimulates lymphatic drainage, detoxifying your skin and firming your facial tone. The downward motion will make you have to swallow a lot, which is 100% normal. Swallowing is a sign of lymphatic drainage, which lets you know that you’re doing it right!
The upward movement stimulates circulation, bringing the blood to the surface and oxygenating the skin. This rejuvenates your skin, bringing a little pink to your cheeks and brightening your overall complexion! With the upward movement, I tend to be a bit more aggressive, massaging the muscles in my jaw to help relieve tension. When you release the knots in your facial muscles, oxygen can flow into them better, helping them to appear more relaxed. (I carry a lot of tension in my face / jaw, so this is an awesome facial massage for me!)
